Poor man's Altec?

What will be a good woofer for eico 14s (14w per side) working with 806a/811bs? I have been looking around. It seems like new pro stuffs are built for 500w/1000w/etc. The vintage Altecs look beautiful on ebay. But who knows what I may be getting? Do they need to be remagged,etc. Help!

Some of the Eminence woofers are efficient, inexpensive and good sounding. I've heard some sounding very good with horn treble but I don't recall the models. Inquire at Audio Asylum high efficiency forum, some fellas there use Eminence.

You can get new GPA "Altecs" from Great Plains. Prices aren't exactly cheap but are very reasonable, especially considering what you're getting.

Units with ceramic mags won't need remagging- that would be most newer than 1980's

Not sure what budget you have in mind. That would help in making recommendations.

416's would be my woof of choice for the horns you have. But they are getting sky high.

418's can be reconed as 416's- if you can find a pair of blown ones Bill can fix them up. They don't sell for a lot blown, but then they aren't always available either.

At $60 per woofer- the parts express Dayton classic is semi- efficient, sounds decent, and worrks reasonably to 800 hz.

Fot $100- Audiopile markets a JBL clone rated 300 watts. Heckuva speaker for that money. it's a pro woofer but very efficient. audiopile.net I think- Mark who runs audiopile is a sound guy, and an honest one. Hundreds of Ebay feedbacks and 100% positive.

When you go a bit higher there is B&C, 18 Sound, RCF...but most of these you are looking at $150 up, you can prolly buy a set of 418 frames and get 'em reconed for that.

Most cheap woofers aren't worth the tin cans and recycled toilet paper they are made from.

Thank you for the reply. I was thinking about 300 for none altec pair. I heard deltalites and kappalites are real good. how do they measure up to 416? If they are not anything close to the altecs I will cover up my speakers and wait for the right moments.

What do you have in mind for a box? Home hifi? Your choices may have different needs.

I hate to advise anyone to throw a blanket on their only tunes, heck, I went a couple towns over today to wish a friend well for Christmas, and had a thouroughly good time in a hillbilly pool hall, drinking beers and lying, and playing oldies on the boomy old juke. Sounded good to me.

My enclosures are about 6,5cf. So, I have some room. Music is best when there are friends around.

That just happens to be a good size for 416s...

Yeah, $300/pr is about the average for 416-xZs, maybe more for Bs or Cs. Certainly nothing wrong with the Zs, if you can save $. Just look for a seller with really good feedback, and a pair that don't appear to have been around the country a few times, and they'll likely be fine as-is.

Do you need 8 or 16 ohms? Only 8s up at the moment.

there is a pair of 416 8b's up in short order on the auction site, from a reputable dealer, item number 330197713744. ive dealt with this person in the past, with good results. they look to be in great shape and they would make your valencias sing...given they can take the large frame woofers
